LENOVO IDEAPAD S12 – Netbook Review

Just when people thought that the Asus Eee series had an insurmountable lead, Lenovo came out with a netbook that not only had a more comfortable keyboard and larger screen size, but it sold it at very low prices. It is no wonder that the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 was included in the Top 5 Netbooks for 2009.
The IdeaPad S12 has the Atom N270 for its processor at 1.6 GHz. It is also the very first netbook to include VIA’s Nano mobile processor as an option. The Via Nano processor has been getting good reviews lately in its battle with its Atom counterpart. The good news doesn’t stop here, the S12 is expected to feature NVIDIA’s Ion technology.

Let’s start looking at why the IdeaPad was considered as one of the best.
Despite it being bigger than your average notebook, its weight is still lighter compared to other notebooks. Its plastic chassis design gives the IdeaPad a bit of business look as with most Lenovo machines.
The IdeaPad’s 12-inch LCD is a sight for sore eyes and leads the others in terms of display. The screen can be viewed at from different angles. Watching movies in the S12 feels almost the same as in a standard-size laptop.
Typing on the S12 is very comfortable since it has full sized keyboards. It is something that other netbooks wish they have. Further, the touchpad is very easy to use.
The IdeaPad S12 also has one nifty feature. It has a face-recognition application which allows you to log in the computer by just putting your face in front of the web cam. Although the novelty wears off, it truly is exciting at the start.
The Atom N270 processor of the S12 can handle basic office applications. It can also do normal web browsing duties and media playback. Don’t multitask too much though as it could stretch its capabilities too thinly.

Pros:
The large screen and full-sized keys make the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 feel like your average laptop. The size of its LCD screen is its main advantage compared to other lenovo netbooks. The battery has a long life of up to 6 hours. The built is good and it can take on the daily tasks of mobile computing.
Cons:
The Atom processor has limited capabilities especially if you’re multitasking. Most users may find the fan rather noisy and the finish seems to attract fingerprints easily.
The single core Atom processor has limited capabilities when it comes to multi-tasking. The fan can be a tad noisy for some users.
Conclusion:
By this time, you should know why the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 was the number one netbook in 2009. The IdeaPad S12 still manages to delight lot of people since the consumers get a larger screen and a full-sized keyboard at the price of a netbook.
